Almost Twinless is a work of fiction based on historical events, the Burlington Avenue fire of 1993 in Los Angeles, and the Ramparts police scandal in the same neighborhood in the late nineties. The fire was one of the worst cases of arson in Los Angeles history. Ten people died in the fire, including seven children. Three suspects from the 18th St. Gang were arrested five years after the fire, but let go for insufficient evidence. It took twenty years after federally mandated changes to the Ramparts Division of the LAPD, but the people who live in the neighborhood finally trusted the police enough to come forward with information that led to these new arrests. The police never stopped investigating the case, and in 2017, twenty years later, as I wrote this book, three new suspects from the 18th Street Gang were arrested and are awaiting trial.
